James Scott boatman

James Scott
For many generations it was the hub of all marine activities in Bangor Harbour.
The “Watch House” is now a restaurant .
From the road look to the bottom left of the window and you will note a small faded plaque with the following words

Jimmy born into the family home and lived all his life in Crosby St (side of the Royal Hotel) He talked using the Bangor dialect (Ulster Scott) one of his sayings was
“if ye hay an enemy, buy hem a boet” .
Every one new him and regarded him as a friend. His last few boats were called Sunbeam. Sunbeam 1 (yin) was stolen out of Portavogie (lifted on to a deck of a ship and never seen again) Sunbeam 2 (twa) was sold to Bangor Sea Anglers.
I note they honoured Jimmy by calling their new boat Sunbeam 3.
The Harbour Masters were under the impression they ran the harbour, but every one new if anything had to be done or moved in the “Big Hole” Jimmy was the man to see.
Everyone walks past his plaque, but no one ever notices it.
I was privileged to know him and as a child helped him to lift his pots, there were lots of songs and poems came from his lips but would not like to repeat any of them if fear of not being P.C.
Jimmy never went to bed until all the local boats were safely home
